Phil Oren has elevated the fitting of hiking boots to a new realm because he combines the old with the new and art with science. He begins with the traditional methods of evaluation and measurement of the foot, and then judiciously adds biomechanical principles of foot function. I highly recommend these hands-on clinics.

How to Get the Perfect Fit

If you are an avid hiker, backpacker, runner, or a person with hard to fit feet, you know all too well that your footwear fit can mean the difference between a fantastic experience or utter misery. How to guarantee that oh-so elusive great fit? Well, it is as easy as visiting a retailer using the FitSystem by Phil Oren®. The FitSystem® is a revolutionary new way to fit feet.

The footwear fitting FitSystem® is as follows:

Inspect Foot

The fitter does a 16 point inspection of your bare feet, both top and bottom, looking for idiosyncrasies that create problems in fitting footwear, i.e. calluses, spurs, enlargements and other problem points.

Select Proper Sock

Most consumers do not understand the importance of proper socks. The sock has a lot of responsibility: it has to create a comfortable environment, prevent hot spots, and control moisture and climate. Sock selection should include considerations of physiology of the feet and the conditions in which they are going to be used.

Measure Feet

Then you get a proper foot measurement that looks at foot length, heel to toe, heel to ball, and width both sitting and standing. The difference is how we determine how much your foot elongates. The average foot elongates more than 1-1/2 sizes. Volume is also assessed, looking at the foot as a three-dimensional object.

Stabilize Foot with Footbed

Footbeds (trim to fit or custom), orthotics, and orthoses are used to control excessive elongation of your foot, which is primarily caused by poor biomechanics of your feet.

Select Proper Footwear

In selecting footwear a person has to communicate with the fitter regarding the usage of the footwear. The fitter matches the volume of the footwear to the volume of the foot. Excessive volume in footwear allows forward movement and heel lift. Proper underfoot protection prevents many foot related problems. Make sure footwear flexes at the widest part of the forefoot. Heel counter should be snug and match the shape of the heel. Toe boxes are important to protect toes and not allow pressure on top of the toes.

Modify Footwear

The footwear should always be modified for any bone spurs, burses, scar tissue, hammer toes and bunions. Six or seven people out of ten should have footwear Modified using a rubbing bar (a tool to stretch specific areas). In the end, proper fit is a near perfect match between your feet, socks, footbeds, footwear, and modification where needed.
